Thousands turn out for March’s Remembrance Day parade
Thousands of people, young and old alike in towns and villages across Fenland gathered on Sunday to mark Remembrance Day and remember those who gave their lives in service of their country.
In March it was business as usual following the regeneration of the town centre, and a newly renovated war memorial.
Thousands gathered along Broad Street to watch the annual parade and Act Of Remembrance.
Regarded as the largest Remembrance Day parade in Cambridgeshire it included members of the Royal Anglian Regiment, dignitaries, as well as representatives of other Armed Forces, and a huge number of clubs and organisations in the town.
Among the dignitaries was the Deputy Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire and an American Air Force Lieutenant Commander.
The band of the 1220 Squadron of the Air Cadets led the way to and from St Peter’s Church, where the annual service of remembrance was held.
There was a poignant air as the Last Post played and a respectful silence as the wreaths were laid by representatives of various organisations in the town.
Parade Marshal Lt Col Nigel ‘Spence’ Spencer oversaw proceedings, which included the laying of 86 wreaths – possibly a record number.
The Rev Andrew Smith, who led the church service, also led the Act Of Remembrance at the war memorial where the traditional playing of Reveille and the Last Post was carried out by bugler Andrew Sutterby from the town band.
