Wisbech Town pay the price for missed chances in Melton Town home clash in UCL Premier Division North

Wisbech coach Ross McNeil lamented his side's missed opportunities in their 3-1 home defeat to play-off chasers Melton Town on Saturday.

McNeil believes the Fenmen deserved better and acknowledged his team paid the price for missing so many chances in the UCL Premier Division North clash at Fountain Fresh Park.

Despite their second home defeat in the space of four days, the Wisbech coach said there were plenty of positives to take away from the loss.

"Hippy (Luke Hipwell) has always said that there will be bumps in the road but today you could see the heart and endeavour of the players and everyone has put a shift in," he said.

"If you don't take your chances at this level then you end up getting punished. Melton are a very good side. They slowed the game down and did a job on us in the second half.

"We're all in this together. We'll keep working hard to put things right. We're on a journey and we'll keep making progress."

William Norcross' opening goal midway through the first half was cancelled out by Jon Challinor as the Fenmen went into the break level.

Yaegan Gore fired the visitors ahead 13 minutes into the second half before a second goal for Norcross in injury time wrapped up the three points for the Pork Pie Army.

The result leaves the Fenmen 16th in the table - four points clear of the dropzone - ahead of a trip to Belper United on the 4G surface at Eastwood next weekend.

"It was a really good performance from us, the first half in particular," said McNeil.

"I felt we were on top, created good chances and their goalkeeper has made a couple of good saves early on.

"We then got done on the counter. It was good play from them but we could have perhaps done better to stop it.

"It was a good reaction from us to get back into the game after going a goal down and it was a great header from Chally.

"We missed two or three other big chances and went into half-time with our tails up.

"I think they've probably had a blast at half-time if I'm honest with you and it was a close game in the second half.

"They've scored their second goal at a good time but we've had a real go again.

"Max's (Mattless) has had a header saved by the goalkeeper, there has been a couple of goalmouth scrambles and we've also had a potential penalty shout turned down.

"There are lots of positives for us to take from the game playing against an established play-off side.

"Those two or three moments where we didn't capitalise on our chances have ultimately cost us."

Wisbech Town: Lakin, Perry-Burdett (Nicholson), Wilson (Papworh-Boston), Barker, Mattless, Freeman (Braham), Bennett (Lennon), Williams (Foster), Frew, Allen, Challinor.
