Loan striker Sam Bennett returns with winning goal for Wisbech Town
Wisbech Town 1, Bourne Town 0
Returning loan striker Sam Bennett scored the only goal at Fountain Fresh Park last night as Wisbech made it four wins out of six.
Visiting Bourne are third in the United Counties Premier North table and had scored 24 goals in three games before this match - but the resolute Fenmen secured their second consecutive clean sheet as they kept The Wakes at bay.
Bennett scored with a glancing header after 24 minutes against a side who had beaten Wisbech 5-0 back in July.
Wisbech, who also had another loanee, Charley Saunders, up front with Bennett and Toby Allen, escaped a late scare when Bourne were awarded a penalty in the dying seconds.
Keeper Will Lakin saved the spot kick, only for the referee to order a retake for moving off his line, but the second penalty hit the post and the home side held on for the three points.
Luke Hipwell’s men are now eight points clear of the drop zone before visiting struggling Kimberley Miners Welfare on Saturday.
Wisbech: Lakin, Perry-Burdett, Wilson, Nicholson, Freeman, Murphy (Mattless), Bennett (Cavozzi), Williams (Falcao), Saunders, Allen (Zaluzinskis), Lennon (Foster).
Attendance: 171.
